MassMutual Life Insurance Review

Overview

Massachusetts Mutual (MassMutual) is a life insurance provider in the United States insuring people since 1851. As one of the first insurance providers to offer retirement and financial planning services in the 1950s, adding life insurance in the 1980s, MassMutual is a leader in the field.

Along with its storied history, MassMutual has fantastic financial strength ratings, boasting an A++ from A.M. Best and an AA+ from S&P Global. This is good news for policyholders, who are also eligible to receive company dividends each year. Because MassMutual is a mutual company, policyholders are partners and the company isn’t beholden to shareholders like many competitors.

PolicyScout Review

If you want a “one-stop shop” for all your insurance and retirement planning needs, MassMutual is a great option to consider. Though their policies are a bit less flexible than some competitors, it’s worth considering. It may not be a good option if you need more flexible and specialized insurance, as they don’t offer many insurance coverage add-ons.

MassMutual’s rates are competitive if you’re in good health and a non-smoker. But if you are a senior or a smoker, you can find better rates elsewhere. If you have a pre-existing condition, MassMutual is a strong contender, as they have a “no medical exam” option, though premiums are higher.

Pros:

  • Excellent financial stability

  • No medical exam and guaranteed acceptance on some policies

  • Easy online application/instant approval for some policies

  • Free life insurance through their LifeBridge program, if you have a child or children

  • Policyholders get annual dividends payout

  • Informative, thorough website and user-friendly Apple app

Cons:

  • Higher rates for seniors and smokers

  • Android app has a lot of room for improvement

  • Fewer add-on riders/less variety

Overall, MassMutual offers customers a decent range of life insurance services and products and should be on most people's consideration list. It is consistently strong financially and can pay out claims and annual dividends to policyholders.

The downside is MassMutual doesn’t offer many add-on riders, which many competitors do provide. For this reason, if you strongly need child riders or other particular policy features, you may need to find another policy. But if that doesn't exclude you, we strongly recommend this company, as its customer service ratings are above average and they respond to customer complaints quickly. As a reputable life insurance provider, MassMutual is worth considering, particularly for those with families and small children.
