Coventry Health Care Health Insurance Review

Overview

Coventry Health Care was founded in 1986 and is based in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2013, Coventry became a subsidiary of Aetna Healthcare, making it part of one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States.

Coventry offers coverage in most states, but not all products and services are available in each location, so it’s important to check to make sure the plan you’re interested in is available in your location. The provider offers both individual and family plans as well as group plans, including managed care and PPO plans. The company also works with Medicare and Medicaid plans in certain states.

With nearly four decades in business, Coventry Health Care is now a trusted name in the health insurance industry.

PolicyScout Review

The Coventry MHNet Behavioral Health is a leader in the health care industry and is dedicated to improving the well-being of its members through outcome-oriented care models. MHNet provides behavioral health and EAP/work-life services for all health plans, including employer groups and public programs. With a member-centric model, the Coventry network provides members with the best mental health and addictions care available through a combination of preventative health programs and disease management.

Coventry’s user-friendly website has a member portal that allows members to review and submit claims, review benefits, access health care tools, and search for providers within network. Customer service is also available through its online portal in addition to email and telephone service. Coventry offers a detailed look at their plans and potential quotes through Aetna online.

Though Coventry is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, it carries an A+ rating from the BBB system. Coventry itself is not rated, but its parent company, Aetna, carries an “A” from A.M. Best for financial ratings.

Pros:

  • Affordable coverage with flexible plans to fit your budget

  • Easy-to-understand plans

  • Low copays and deductibles, no matter your plan

  • No specialist referrals required when you visit in-network

  • Wellness programs available for all members

  • User-friendly website

Cons:

  • No dental, vision, or add-on plans available

  • Customer service ratings are less than average related to claims

  • No mobile app available

Other Important Things to Note

If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for insurance, Coventry likely isn’t your best bet since they don’t offer add-on plans for dental, vision, or other types of insurance. The health plan selection, however, makes up for what the add-ons lack. If you are on a tight budget and need a variety of options, Coventry offers the option of health savings account plans as well as low deductibles and co-payments, compared to competitors of the same size. The wide menu and variety of available plans provide customers with more control over your spending on health care, giving customers the opportunity to set aside money whenever possible to help cover deductibles and other expenses.

Ultimately, the impressive menu of health insurance options provided by Coventry makes it worth investigating. The biggest con is its lack of add-ons. With the acquisition by its parent company Aetna, Coventry is likely to remain financially strong and reliable for many years to come.
