What Types of Auto Insurance Does Geico Offer?

There are many different types of car insurance available in the U.S. Geico offers most of these types of insurance.

It’s important to know what the following insurance terms mean so that you can understand your Geico auto insurance policy.

Liability coverage

Liability coverage is split into two types of insurance:

  • Bodily injury liability: This insurance pays for medical bills and lost wages of anyone who gets injured as a result of an accident you cause.

  • Property damage liability: This coverage pays out if you damage someone else’s property, like their car, in an accident you’ve caused.

Most U.S. states require drivers or car owners to have this type of insurance coverage.

Liability coverage helps you to pay for any damage to others’ property, such as their car, surrounding buildings, or injuries because of a car accident.

If you are found to be at fault for an accident—meaning that you’ve caused the accident—liability insurance will pay for any costs associated with the accident. However, be sure to read your policy carefully to know exactly what is and isn’t covered by the insurance you have.

Comprehensive coverage

This type of insurance policy pays for any damage to your car that isn’t caused by a car accident.

This damage can be from theft, fire, vandalism, natural disasters such as hail or earthquakes, and collisions with animals such as hitting a deer.

Collision coverage

For auto insurance customers, collision coverage pays for any damage to your car, whether you own or rent it.

Collision coverage only pays for repairs to your own vehicle if you have an accident.

Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments insurance

When you get into a car accident, you or the other driver may become injured.

This is where personal injury protection (PIP) insurance is valuable. It will cover the medical bills for you and any passengers in your car. It also covers funeral costs.

PIP can also help if you have any loss of income due to injuries from an accident, as well as cover childcare or cleaning services that you need because you are injured.

All of this will depend on what is listed in your insurance policy.

Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage

Sometimes, other drivers don’t have insurance, or they are underinsured. Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage protects you in these instances.

In other words, if someone can’t pay for the damage to your car, this type of insurance will cover the bills. It also applies to a hit-and-run.

Uninsured motorists (UM) insurance is required in 20 U.S. states if you own or rent a car. This means that if you live in one of these states, you must have insurance that protects you if you have an accident with another driver who doesn’t have insurance.

Other types of insurance coverage

There are some extra types of auto insurance that Geico offers to its members:

  • Rental reimbursement: This means you get a rental car if yours is too damaged to drive.

  • Roadside assistance: This includes help if your car breaks down or needs a tow while on the road.

  • Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) insurance: This is insurance for newer cars if you want your car to only be repaired with factory-original parts.

  • Classic car insurance: This is insurance for classic or collectible cars that may need special transport if you have an accident.

  • Breakdown coverage: Geico offers this as additional coverage if your car has a mechanical breakdown.

The Benefits And Limitations Of Geico Car Insurance

When you compare car insurance companies, it’s a good idea to understand the pros and cons of choosing a particular insurance provider.

✅ Pro: Plenty of discounts

As we mentioned before, Geico offers a range of discounts to its customers. These discounts can reduce your insurance premium.

✅ Pro: A top-rated mobile app

There is a rating system that scores mobile insurance apps in the U.S. called the Keynova Mobile Insurance Scorecard. In the second quarter of 2021, Geico’s app received a high score.

Not only can you file claims and access your digital insurance card on the app, but it also features a robot virtual assistant called Gabby, who you can speak to if you need help.

✅ Pro: Good third-party ratings

Geico has solid third-party ratings. Third-party ratings are scores that are given to insurance providers by AM Best, JD Power, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) based on their customer service, financial strength, and the complaints they receive.

The insurance company has an A++ rating with a credit rating agency called AM Best. This is the highest possible rating an auto insurance provider can get.

In a study by an organization called JD Power, Geico was ranked 12th out of 25 national insurance companies.

Here is a graph showing where Geico ranks in the 2021 JD Power auto insurance study:

It’s important to know what an insurance provider’s rankings and reviews are because these show what the general customer’s experience with the provider is like.

You want to choose a car insurance company that is known for good customer service.

✅ Pro: Many coverage choices

Geico car insurance has a range of coverage options to choose from, as you may have noticed in the list we provided above.

The variety of coverage available means you can select the plan that suits your auto insurance needs best.

❌ Con: Accident Forgiveness is not available in all states

With many car insurance companies, if you have an accident, your insurance premium will be increased.

However, Geico has something called Accident Forgiveness which protects you from your premium going up if you have an accident.

Remember -

Many car insurance companies will increase your yearly premium if you cause an accident. But if your policy includes Accident Forgiveness, your premium won’t rise, even if you are found at-fault for an accident.

Unfortunately, Geico’s Accident Forgiveness is unavailable in California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

If you live in one of these states, you will not have access to Accident Forgiveness, and your premium may increase if you cause an accident.

❌ Con: Fewer local agents

Because Geico prefers people to use their app and their website to get quotes and assistance online, they have fewer insurance agents available compared to other auto insurance companies.

So, if you need more personalized assistance from an insurance agent, it may be difficult to find one nearby.

❌ Con: They don’t offer gap insurance

Gap insurance is for people who own cars that are financed. This means they have bought their car using a loan that they are paying off.

Gap insurance covers the price of their car and whatever amount they owe on their car loan.

Geico doesn’t offer gap insurance at this time. If you want gap insurance, you will need to get it from another provider.

What Is The Cost of Geico Car Insurance?

Most U.S. states have a minimum amount of auto insurance coverage that you must have if you own or rent a car.

This minimum coverage usually includes liability insurance. But in some states, you must also have uninsured motorist insurance and PIP:

  • Personal injury protection (PIP) pays for any medical bills related to a car accident you are involved in.

  • Uninsured motorist insurance is coverage for car accidents where the other driver doesn’t have auto insurance.

When you choose a car insurance policy, you can opt to only have coverage for the minimum requirements according to the state you live in.

You can also choose to have higher coverage than what the state requires, which is known as high or maximum coverage.

You may want to choose high or maximum coverage if you want to pay a lower deductible for your insurance claims. Maximum coverage gives you more protection and will save you from paying money out of your pocket toward bills related to a car accident.

Geico has the second lowest minimum coverage premiums in the country. Their premiums for minimum coverage are nearly $400 lower than the national average.
